We are dedicated to helping you keep your dog safe; here is a great option to keep them close!

I have many friends and family that struggle to keep their dog in the yard. Building a wood or chain fence could be too hard for some, too expensive or some may have restrictions on building a physical fence. Therefore a great option would be an invisible fence. A lot of dogs need room to run, so just tying them out on a leash to go potty isn’t enough.

I became a fan of the invisible fence when we lost our 1 year old yellow Labrador puppy. She had jumped our 6 ft wooden fence to follow us and ended up getting hit by a car. One of the worst days ever. Her mom, Jesse, would chase squirrels into the neighbors yard or into the street. It can be very scary when your dog runs away or runs into traffic!

Jesse is also deaf currently, so if you have a dog with a disability like that, it can be a great way to keep them close.

invisible fence, in-ground fence, wireless fence

The research is done, here are the top 3 rated invisible fences:

First, the differences between in-ground and wireless:

  • In-ground invisible fence can be customized to an exact perimeter. It has to be placed in the ground and plugged into electrical outlet. The in-ground fencing would be better for irregular yards.
  • Wireless fencing is battery powered and broadcasts a large circular boundary. The bonus with wireless is that it’s portable, where the in-ground invisible fence is not.

Now, for the top rated and very worth it for the peace of mind:

  • PetSafe Wireless pet containing system, rated an A (4.4 stars)  Covers up to 1/2 an acre in with the wireless transmitters included. It alerts your pet with a beep.
As with most systems, you can purchase more wire and collars for unlimited dogs. Positive comments are; that it worked quickly and it was easy to set up. This system seemed to work well on older dogs, hyper breeds and puppies. Other helpful reviews stated it didn’t work well with a hilly yard and too short of coverage.
  • Petsafe stubborn dog In-ground fence, rated an A- (4.8 starts)  Covers up to 1/3 with wire included. (expandable up to 25 acres). With this invisible fence, tone along with static alerts your dog with a beep and vibration. One of the reviews stated the dog used to jump the fence, so they just hung the wire on their fence and it worked great. Good to know if you don’t want to bury it!
  • SportDog In-Ground fence system, also rated an A- (4.8 stars) This is for yards up to 100 acres, 1000 feet of wire and 100 flags included. This in-ground invisible fence uses 4 levels of vibration/tone. Training time states 2 weeks and has 2 year warranty. All reviews were 4 and 5 stars for this on chewy, nothing lower! All positive comments. Additional collars can be purchased for unlimited dogs.

Although keeping your dog safe and off the streets is very important; the invisible fence isn’t for everyone. If you have an overly aggressive dog or a dog with health problems it might not be your best bet. Also if your dog is very territorial and barks whenever a leaf blows by, a wooden fence to keep them from seeing might be better!

See our blog post on barking dogs for more help with that!

When deciding on an invisible fence, remember to take time to read the comments for feedback, that could be helpful too!
