As my yellow lab got older, she was slowing down. I could tell her joints were sore and it was harder for her to get up. So, I wanted to try an orthopedic dog bed to help evenly distribute weight and alleviate painful pressure on her muscles and joints.
The truth is, dogs sleeping on the floor or other hard surfaces can be damaging to their health. They need beds, just like we do. Orthopedic dog beds can be used to help ease the pain and discomfort of muscles, hip dysplasia, arthritis, or other joint problems…especially helpful with senior dogs.

I like to order from Chewy because I can just add to my dog food auto ship (for an extra 5% off) and get free shipping. After finding an orthopedic dog bed for under $40, I ordered 1 for each dog!
I placed one next to my bed for Jesse because she couldn’t jump up on the bed any longer. She seemed to like it and was on it every night. Although I wish they were a little more thick, it fulfills it’s purpose and is large enough. It is made with medical-grade orthopedic foam that is egg-crate style to evenly distribute the weight.
It is nice that it’s indoor outdoor and water resistant. The poly-canvas zip cover is also removable for cleaning. I always try to find dog beds with removable covers for easy cleaning. I like the material on this one because it’s also easy to wipe off to spot clean. Our puppy peed on one of them and it didn’t seep in!
As an update to this original blog post, Jesse has since passed away and almost a year later we still have 2 of the 4 orthopedic dog beds mentioned above. After Jesse passed, we welcomed another yellow Labrador puppy, from my granddog, with Jesse’s bloodline. JJ is amazing but she is the reason 2 dog beds were destroyed. She loves to chew things up!
The Elevated Dog Bed
Now we have purchased a new bed for Riley, (Jesse’s daughter) who is 9 years old. It’s an elevated one! They are great in a house with hard floors and for outside! I am hoping it’s not as temping to chew up either because it’s made of steel! So far so good!
So Cyber Monday I was shopping online and saw this deal from Chewy for the Coolaroo elevated dog bed. It was on sale plus you got a free replacement cover with purchase. We have hardwood floors, so this is a great option for us to keep her joints elevated off the hard ground.
The Coolaroo is steel framed for durability with having big dogs like Labradors. It has a cover that helps to keep them cool. Riley loves it more than the puppies… or maybe the younger dogs don’t lay in it because they know it’s Rileys. It is a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be so I had to find a good place for it.
I can also easily move it outside to keep them up off the ground and free from laying in the dirt or on hard cement! A lot of the reviews rave about how they love it for their dogs outdoors, also because they stay cool. It’s easy to vacuum and wipe off as the fabric is made out of high density breathable polyethylene to eliminate hot spots. It is also flea, mite, mold and mildew resistant!
I love it and it was really easy to put together! Right now all elevated dog beds are on sale (this one for $22.92!) With excellent ratings and how sturdy it is, I am a very happy dog mom!
I am still working on getting all the dogs to lay on the dog beds instead of the furniture. Our dogs are spoiled but we like to try to keep them down so they don’t ruin the new couches.
Hope you enjoyed this and found it helpful! Dog Bless~
